Kitchen Interior Design - Tips And Ideas

After your home has been constructed, interior design comes into play. The kitchen is one of the significant places in your house that requires interior designing. However, it is also among the most expensive zones to renovate and re-design. So when experts charge you high enough just for a piece of advice, why not attempt to remodel your kitchen by yourself?

Whether you employ an interior designer or you intend to do the job yourself, careful planning is always important in order to achieve the looks and the effect that you want for your kitchen. For do it yourselfers, you have to be knowledgeable enough of the tips and ideas as well as the mistakes that most homeowners have made in remodeling their kitchens.

Design Tips

1. If you have a small kitchen, make use of light colors like beige or off white. If you want to enliven or brighten up the place, you can accentuate it using bright colors. Remember that dark colors will make the kitchen appear smaller than its real size.

2. Avoid using dark colored tiles in the kitchen counters. Though royal blue or black look great, soap residue is very visible in these shades. And what's worse is that it becomes very difficult to clean when it hardened. So if you don't have a housekeeper or a helper that will clean and maintain the countertops everyday, better choose tiles with light colors.

3. The refrigerator, sink and cooking stove should be arranged well, forming a work triangle. The distance of these three stations should not be more than 26 feet. They need to be close enough for ease in food preparation.

4. You can adorn your kitchen with indoor plants, especially the small ones. Plants always bring a fresh feeling to the kitchen's interior design.

5. On holidays, transform the appearance of the kitchen by using themed slipcovers, window curtains and table cloth to spice up the room and make it fit for the occasion.

6. Be very sure that the kitchen has an adequate lighting. Insufficient lighting will make your kitchen look and feel gloomy and cramped. Besides the main lighting fixture in the middle of the kitchen, you can also put task lights under the hanging cabinets.

7. Get placemats, dishes, trivets, bowls and other cutlery that match the theme of your kitchen design.

By simply following this handful of tips, you can achieve the looks and effects that you're wishing for your kitchen to have. And you can do your renovation job quickly and more affordably. So if you think that functionality alone is not enough, better create a kitchen that's stylish, safe and comfortable. And you can realize this by combining simplicity with modern comfort and elegance of the yesteryears.

How to Build a Sustainable Kitchen Design

There is a looming reality taking place in the society today. Increasing concerns on global warming and rising energy prices are on the loose, and so, the concept of high-performance homes and sustainable designs are considered to be urgent issues. The need for more energy-efficient utility and facility designs is inevitable.

A home's energy and conservation points are located within the house itself. A large part of domestic costs are from maintenance, service, and energy. Reports on energy analysis have shown that homes together with buildings, commercial establishments, and facilities contribute tremendous consumption of resources especially energy, which accounts nearly 40 - 60% of the total consumption. Lighting, refrigeration, plumbing, and fire-fighting facilities represent the largest percentage of structural energy demand. Because of the impact on energy, it is important that efficient facility designs are integrated into a home or building.

These things when left unattended can wreak havoc not only to the structure's life cycle but more importantly on its operation and maintenance cost. With this, it is not surprising why homeowners do not just entrust facilities design to ordinary contractors. They assign it to the best professionals in town who can weave in all aspects and engineer the whole into a fine working specimen that can breathe efficiently for years to come.

Considering the many parts of a home, the kitchen is considered to be one of the most important sections. This is where the family's food are being stored, prepared, and cooked.

Hence, it is important to maintain safety and security at all times to ensure harmonious work in the area. Additionally, this is where most of the appliances are located. Hence, among all other parts in the house, the kitchen contributes almost half of the total energy consumption. With this, it is equally important to create a kitchen design that will match the requirements of integrated or sustainable design.

Why Sustainable Design?

Sustainable design, when incorporated within a home or building, triggers high performance and various advantages and keep energy consumption at a minimum. Creating sustainable kitchen design includes putting together "green design strategies" into standard design criteria. With this, you may consider the following areas:

1. Lighting design

Lighting efficiency is an essential factor in developing high-performance in homes. Like HVAC, several factors are necessary to ensure sustainable development in building operations - quality of lighting, aesthetics, energy efficiency, etc.

Designs that provide occupancy or light-level sensors, lighting controls, and dimming systems to determine when lights are illuminated, optimizes lighting needs, and provides homeowners with timed overrides. With advanced lighting designs, modulated lighting levels in proportion to available daylight are possible, which, in the end, saves energy. With this, you can maximize light coming from natural source. You may also use window panels that are specifically designed for optimizing the principles of sustainable development.

2. Materials

Wallpapers, table countertops, wood cabinets, carpet tiles - every material used in your kitchen should be designed according to the current standards of sustainable or green design. In this way, you can be sure that whatever material you use in your kitchen, you can be sure that you do not just provide clean living to your family but you also help protect the environment.

3. Appliances

To match the sustainability of your kitchen, make it a point to use appliances that provides high energy savings and are environmentally friendly. Among all appliances being used in the kitchen, refrigerators are considered to be the most important. This is where you keep and preserve your food.

Temperature control is critical to food safety, shelf-life and quality. However, in most cases temperature control and energy consumption do not go along together. You want to keep food fresh by providing better gauge on the temperature, which will eventually put an impact on your energy consumption. Higher temperature means higher electricity bills. But with a good refrigeration design, you can be sure that you can keep these two factors working harmoniously together.

With increasing requirements for energy efficient facilities in most countries and with the growing environmental awareness, the idea of incorporating sustainable design into your kitchen will not just provide your family a better environment within your home but also offer the community a better place to live.

How to Save Money Around the Kitchen - Refrigerators and Freezers

Everybody's looking to save money these days, and our households are one of our biggest expenses. Whether we live in a small apartment and pay rent or in a large house and pay a mortgage, we have to pay the utility and energy bills every month (unless you're lucky enough to still be living with mom and dad!). Some of the biggest energy hogs in the house are our appliances, and those that reside in the kitchen are the biggest culprits of all: the refrigerator and freezer.

Let's take a look at some ways to make our kitchen appliance use more efficient and save money by lowering our bills.

Saving Money with Refrigerators and Freezers

These kitchen appliances are always on, so it's no surprise that they are the biggest power drains in the house. We're not about to stop eating refrigerated foods, so there's no reasonable way to eliminate their use altogether (and who'd want to give up those nicely chilled sodas and beers anyway?). But we can make our refrigerators and freezers more efficient. Here's how:

1. Keep your freezer full

It costs more to keep an empty freezer cold than a full one, so it pays to keep your unit stuffed full of frozen goods. If it's looking a little bare in between grocery trips, fill it with bags of ice to make it run more efficiently. This simple fix can save you $75 a year.

2. Keep the doors closed

Do you ever stand in front of the refrigerator with the door wide open while you ponder what to eat? You know that cold whoosh of air that embraces you while you're there? That's all the air your refrigerator worked so hard to chill falling out onto the floor (really--heat rises and cold air sinks, so the cold air literally falls out when you open the fridge or freezer). Once you've taken your sweet time selecting your snack, the refrigerator has to kick into high gear in order to chill the air inside again.

The obvious answer is to open the door as seldom as possible, and when you do go into the fridge, quickly get the item you need and close the door again. Keep track of what's in the refrigerator (it helps to always store the same types of items on the same shelf or in the same bin), so you don't have to get down on your knees and root around to look for things.

You can save more than $50 a year simply by opening your freezer and refrigerator doors fewer times a day.

3. Adjust the temperature

Your foods may not need to be as cold as you think. Most people set their refrigerator thermostats close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but setting the temperature no higher than 40 degrees still keeps food fresh, while saving you $25 a year in energy.

4. Choose a chest freezer

Many large families choose to keep an extra freezer in the garage or on a service porch. Instead of getting an upright freezer for this, choose a chest-style model. Remember what we said about cold air falling out of upright models? Well that doesn't happen with chest models, since you open the door from above. Chest freezers are as much as twice as efficient as upright freezers, and making this simple choice can save you $50 a year.

5. Pass on the ice-maker if you're buying a new fridge

I know, ice makers are awesome. I always enjoy them when I visit friends who have them integrated into their refrigerators, but not only do you save money on the initial purchase when you buy a unit without these models, but you save money on your monthly bills too. Ice makers use about 300 kilowatt-hours a year in energy costs (this is in addition to your regular refrigerator/freezer requirements), and I can tell you from first-hand experience that refrigerators with automatic ice makers need repairs more often than standard units.

There you go: a few ways to save money in the kitchen by making smart use of your refrigerator and freezer usage.

Feng Shui Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the house. That's why so many parties end up there. To create and maintain good feng shui in the kitchen will affect all areas of your life -- your health, your finances, your career and your relationships. Here are a few ways to improve the feng shui of your kitchen.

1) Keep reds to a minimum. This is not to say there should not be any red in the kitchen, but think hard before you go with a color scheme that's heavy on the reds. With so much fire element in the kitchen already from the stove and the microwave, adding too much more will create an imbalance.

2) Balance fire and water. The element of fire, represented by the stove, and the element of water, represented by the sink, counteract each other. If they are next to each other they will minimize the other's influence, but if they are directly across from each other, they will "fight". To cure this, put the wood element between them, thus creating the very positive natural cycle of water-wood-fire. The "wood" can be a wooden cutting board, but a live plant is better. Wood can also be a green rug, or a green storage container, or even a green dishrag.

3) Cook from the command position. The command position faces the primary entrance to the room. Unfortunately, most kitchens are designed so that your back is facing this entrance when you are cooking. In feng shui, this means you feel a little vulnerable and ill at ease. To cure this problem put a mirror over your stove so you can see when someone comes in the room. If you can angle the mirror so the burners on the stove are visible in the mirror, you will have symbolically doubled your food and in feng shui symbolism, doubled your money.

4) Empty any pots with water in them on the stove when you are done with them. People who tend to keep a filled kettle at the ready can make some improvements here.

5) Reduce clutter. This especially applies to everything "stored" under the cabinets. If your counters tend to get filled with things, that's another source of clutter to control.

6) Clean. In feng shui, clean surfaces let chi, or energy, move around better. When was the last time you cleaned under your refrigerator, or cleaned the top of the cabinets, or cleaned the fronts of your cabinets? Having a clean stove top and a clean sink is just the beginning of a truly spotless kitchen.

7) Store cleaning materials away from food. Keeping cleansers and food together symbolizes cleaning out your good health, or sterility, so assign one cabinet for cleaning materials and keep the food out of there.

8) Energize. A fountain, so long as it is away from the stove, is good for a kitchen. So are wind chimes, colorful pottery and cookware, and anything that makes you feel good. Of course, good lighting is extremely important, too. If you can't afford to put in a skylight, at least invest in good full-spectrum light bulbs.
